Hazardous materials are potentially harmful substances including petroleum products and ignitable, toxic, or corrosive material. Hazardous materials include hazardous waste, which are waste materials with hazardous properties. Transportation projects may become involved with hazardous materials, for example, when constructing or widening a roadway, if there are buried substances that become disturbed or exposed.
Hazardous materials are regulated under the Vermont ANR Department of Environmental Conservation’s Vermont Hazardous Waste Management Program, which administers both the state and federal laws. VTrans’ Operations Division also has a Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Program to address hazardous materials issues that arise with transportation projects. For questions regarding hazardous material compliance issues, contact the program’s coordinator (contact information below).
