The Geotechnical Section works collaboratively with the Drill Team, which resides within District 6 of the Maintenance & Fleet Division at VTrans and are based out of the Dill Building in Berlin. The Geotechnical coordinates drilling requests, provides on-site logging of samples, delivery of samples to the soils lab, and development of boring logs for use in design.
The Drill Team operates track and skid mounted wash boring, auger, and coring rigs, truck mounted auger rigs, and various soil and rock sampling devices. The Drill Team conducts borings and field testing in accordance with AASHTO requirements that include, soil sampling, rock coring, and field identification of soils; installs monitoring wells and inclinometers; and performs pavement and concrete coring operations.
