I-89 Georgia Exit 18 southbound off ramp

On 11/4, AOT crews were assessing a sinkhole on the off ramp, about six to eight feet deep, located near the guard rail, and created by high water level around the culvert. When a truck passed by, the crew could see the pavement moving and immediately closed the off ramp. AOT mobilized contractor S.D. Ireland to assess the problem fully. The agency always tries to repair existing infrastructure, and initial assessments indicated that a two-week closure would be needed to complete repairs. After the contractor excavated down to the existing culvert, however, extensive damage was evident, and AOT decided that a permanent replacement was warranted, expected to last 100+ years. The work schedule is based on work occurring seven days per week with likely double shifts. The project completion is estimated for late December.

VT-108 “The Notch”

On 11/7, The Notch (VT-108 in Stowe/Cambridge) was closed indefinitely due to winter weather. The closure begins on the Stowe side near Barnes Camp Visitor Center and extends into Cambridge near the upper parking lot at Smuggler’s Notch Resort. AOT has not yet determined whether the road is now closed for the season or if it is temporary. Mother Nature will dictate that. Updates will be posted here and on the AOT Facebook and Twitter pages.
