This project is substantially complete. On behalf of the Vermont Agency of Transportation and myself, we would like to thank everyone for your patience and understanding during this Emergency Culvert Replacement Project.
Crews work diligently over the past weekend to get the work zone cleaned up on I-89 including paving, line striping, removal of the crossover and barriers allowing for I-89 to be back to the normal travel pattern b 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2022.

PROJECT UPDATE: Work continues 24 hours/day - 7 days/week and will continue until the I-89 is back to its normal traffic pattern.
Today and tomorrow morning (10/26 & 10/27):
- Paving operations on I-89
Thursday, October 27:
- Guardrail installation
- Rumble strip installation
- Line striping
Friday, October 28 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Approximately 15 minute rolling roadblock will take place on I-89 southbound.
- Removal of existing line striping and alter the lane pattern. This will allow one lane traffic in the southbound travel lane.
- Removal of the pavement from the crossovers and some Jersey Barriers along with other median work.
I-89 Northbound Closure Saturday 8:00 p.m. until Sunday 6:00 a.m.:
- Traffic will follow a signed detour having all motorists Exiting I-89 in Waterbury onto US Route 2 westbound and back onto I-89 in Richmond. This detour will allow for remaining work to be completed with the removal of the remaining Jersey Barriers and traffic control devises.
Sunday 6:00 a.m.:
- It is anticipated that all lanes will be open on I-89. Any further work should not impact the traveling public.
PROJECT UPDATE: Backfill operations continued, as weather permitted.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, October 24, 2022.
Monday through Saturday - 24 hours/day, Sunday - Daytime:
- Backfill operations continues.
- Installation of support excavation to continue.
PROJECT UPDATE: Water is now flowing in the box culvert. Backfill has begun. Due to the weather forecast, there will not be any work tonight, but will continue tomorrow morning.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, October 17, 2022. The work hours are 24 hours a day, 6 days per week.
Monday through Saturday - 24 hours per day:
- Backfill operations will continue.
PROJECT UPDATE: The installation of the precast concrete culvert box sections continued and is expected to be completed today.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, October 10, 2022. The work hours are 24 hours a day, 6 days per week.
Monday through Saturday - 24 hours per day:
- The building of the culvert stream bed to get the stream flowing into the new concrete box culvert.
- Backfill operations will begin.
PROJECT UPDATE: The installation of the precast concrete culvert bottoms for the new box culvert has begun. Once all 24 sections have been placed, stone aggregate will be placed in the culvert bed to slow the water flow down and provide stream bed material for fish and wildlife.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, October 3, 2022. Please note the new work hours being 24 hours a day, 6 days per week.
Monday through Saturday - 24 hours per day:
- Installation of the precast concrete tops of the box culvert
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, September 26, 2022. Please note the new work hours being 24 hours a day, 6 days per week.
Monday through Saturday - 24 hours per day:
- Complete the "support of excavation" work.
- Preparation work to begin the installation of the new culvert box culvert.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, September 18, 2022. Please note the new work hours being 24 hours a day, 6 days per week.
Monday through Saturday - 24 hours per day:
- Complete the "support of excavation" work.
- Preparation work for the installation of the new culvert.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, September 12, 2022:
Monday through Friday - Daytime:
- Continue excavation work for the "support of excavation" for the removal of the failed culvert.
- Additional bracing continues to be placed as the excavation depth increases.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, September 5, 2022:
Monday:
- No work due to the Labor Day holiday
Tuesday through Friday - Daytime:
- Continue installation of metal sheeting to stabilize the foundation to reach the failed culvert.
