Richmond Bridge #29

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) is replacing Bridge #29 in Richmond, VT along U.S. Route 2 spanning Interstate 89. The project will replace the existing 8-span bridge with a new 2-span off-alignment bridge that matches the width of the corridor. The new bridge will be widened to meet the current typical section of the corridor. This includes 6-foot shoulders and two 12-foot travel lanes. 

Traffic on US Route 2 will be maintained over the existing bridge during construction.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS BELOW:

  • U.S. Route 2 Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. will have traffic control present with intermittent 1-lane of alternating travel.

I-89 Traffic in the Town of Richmond, south of Exit 11:

  • Northbound passing lane is closed from Mile Marker 75.45 to Mile Marker 76.79.
  • Southbound traffic will use the crossover into the northbound passing lane from Mile Marker 77.29 to Mile Marker 75.71.

Motorists shall follow the posted speed limit within the construction zone; Speed enforement will be present, and fines will be doubled.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning November 18, 2024:

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:

  • Continue demolition of the old bridge.
  • Restore traffic to both I-89 northbound and southbound lanes by late week.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed bridge grinding; Completed the guardrail installation for this construction season; Installed pavement markings; Earth work; Prepped for the opening of the I-89 crossovers.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning October 21, 2024:

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Opening of the new bridge to traffic on Monday.
  • Begin demolition of the old bridge.
  • Work on the removal of the existing form work on the new bridge.
  • I-89 northbound crossovers to be back in service on Thursday.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed the installation of the bridge rail; Installed the base and intermediate lifts of pavement on both bridge approaches.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning October 14, 2024:

Monday:

  • Work will be outside of the roadway and will not impact the traveling public.

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Continue the installation of guardrail.
  • Installation of pavement markings throughout the project limits.
  • Ongoing site restoration work.
  • Prepare the new bridge for traffic.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed the installation of the curlvert on the eastern end of the project and restored the roadway width in the area; Backfilled the approach slabs and began prepping the area for base pavement to be installed; Began the installation of the bridge rail.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning October 7, 2024:

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Continue the installation of the bridge rail.
  • Resume paving the base on both bridge approaches.
  • Ongoing site restoration work.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed all concrete pours for the bridge installation.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning September 30, 2024:

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Backfill around the headwalls of Culvert #10 and prep the roadway for the base course of pavement.
  • Install bridge rail.
  • Install approach curb.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed the installation of the approach slabs and steel bridge joints; Poured the concrete headwalls for Culvert #10 on the eastern end of the project; Began forming the curb on the bridge deck.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning September 23, 2024:

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Backfill around the headwalls of Culvert #10 and prep the roadway for the base course of pavement.
  • Pour the concrete curb on the bridge deck.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed the final concrete deck pour of the bridge; Installed the approach slab and steel joint on the eastern end of the new bridge; Continued installing the headwalls for Culvert 10 on the eastern most culvert and formed the footings for both headwalls.

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Install the western approach slab and steel joint on the new bridge.
  • Pour the concrete headwalls for Culvert 10.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed deck pour 2 of 3 near the western end of the bridge. Continued installing the support of excavation for the eastern most culvert crossing and formed the footings for the installation of both headwalls.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning September 9, 2024:

Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Continue to install the headwalls for Culvert 10 on the eastern most edge of the project.

Tuesday 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.:

  • Pour the middle section of the bridge deck - this will be the final pour of the deck.

PROJECT UPDATE: Completed forming the new bridge deck and the installation of the reinforced steel; Continued installing the support of excavation for the eastern most culvert crossing; Completed deck pour 1 of 3 near the eastern end of the bridge.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning September 2, 2024:

Monday:

  • No work due to the Labor Day holiday.

Tuesday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Pour the western most side of the bridge deck - this will be the second of three pours.
  • Continue to install the headwalls for Culvert 10 on the eatern most edge of the project.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning August 26, 2024:

Saturday, Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday 6:30 a.m. to noon:

  • Continue the tie-in of the reinforcement steel on the new bridge deck.
  • Pour the eastern most side of the bridge deck - this will be the first of three pours.
  • Install the headwalls for Culvert 10 on the eatern most edge of the project.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS BELOW:

  • U.S. Route 2 Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. will have traffic control present with 1-lane of alternating travel.
  • U.S. Route 2 on both the eastern and western approaches of the project are a gravel surface, motorists are urged to use caution.
  • Monday through Friday I-89 traffic, south of Exit 11, motorists will encounter daily lane closures between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in both the northbound and southbound lanes.

Motorists shall follow the posted speed limit within the construction zone; Speed enforement will be present, and fines will be doubled.

PROJECT UPDATE: Continued forming the new bridge deck; Continued building the new roadway approach to the new bridge on the west end of the project; Installed permanent line striping on I-89 and opened all lanes of traffic outside of normal working hours.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning August 17, 2024:

Saturday, Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.:

  • Continue forming the bridge deck.
  • Continue building the new roadway approach on the west end of the project in front of the Richmond Fire Station.

  • Wednesday through Friday I-89 traffic will encounter daily lane closures between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

PROJECT UPDATE: Continued forming the new bridge deck; Completed building the new roadway approach to the new bridge on the east end of the project and installed gravel; Removed barriers from the southbound lanes on I-89.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning August 12, 2024:

Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.:

  • Continue forming the bridge deck.
  • Continue building the new roadway approach work on the west end of the project in front of the Richmond Fire Station - motorists will be traveling on a gravel surface.
  • Removal of the temporary line striping and painting new permanent line striping on I-89.

  • I-89 Traffic in the Town of Richmond, south of Exit 11:
  • Northbound passing lane closed to northbound traffic between Mile Marker 75.45 to Mile Marker 76.79.
  • Southbound passing lane closed to southbound traffic between Mile Marker 77.29 to Mile Marker 75.71.
  • Beginning June 25, northbound traffic will be placed in the southbound passing lane between Mile Marker 75.45 to Mile Marker 76.79. This new lane configuration will be in effect for the next several weeks.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS BELOW:

  • U.S. Route 2 has no anticipated lane closures this week.
  • I-89 Traffic:
  • Monday, June 3rd and Tuesday, June 4th from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. southbound traffic will encounter a passing lane closure.
  • Wednesday, June 5th southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane from Mile Marker 77.29 to Mile Marker 75.71; A new traffic pattern will be in effect 24/7.
  • Wednesday, June 5th through Friday, June 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. motorists will encounter intermittent rolling roadblocks to all for material being delivered onsite.

Northbound traffic entering the traffic control zone shall expect the zipper merge to be implemented. Please follow the direction of the traffic control signs and devices.

PROJECT UPDATE: Continued with crane assembly and crane pad construction within the I-89 median.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning June 3, 2024:

Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.:

  • Continue the installation of traffic barrier to separate northbound and southbound traffic within the I-89 northbound and southbound barrels.
  • Continue with crane assembly and crane pad construction.
  • Materials to be delivered onsite within the I-89 median.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS BELOW:

  • U.S. Route 2 Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. - Traffic control will be present allowing for intermittent 1-lane of alternating travel.
  • I-89 Traffic:
  • Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Southbound passing lane closure.
  • Tuesday, May 28, 2024 - Northbound travel lane will be closed from Mile Marker 75.45 to Mile Marker 76.79 and reopened once the work is completed.
  • Tuesday, May 28, 2024, a complete closure of the northbound passing lane after the work has been completed in the travel lane. This closure will be in effect for several weeks.

 

NOTE: Tuesday's lane closures may be shifted a day or two if the weather doesn't allow for the installation of temporary line markings.

WEEKLY CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

PROJECT UPDATE: Worked on Abutment 2 roadway approach; Continued with crane pad construction near pier in the I-89 median.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning May 27, 2024:

Monday:

  • No work due to the Memorial Day Holiday.

Tuesday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.:

  • Begin the installation of traffic barrier to separate northbound and southbound traffic within the I-89 northbound barrel.
  • Work on slope construction on the eastern side of the project.

  • Construction of the crane pads in preparation for steel erection
  • Continue construction of bridge Abutment 2 and it's support wall on the east side of the project site.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning May 13, 2024:

Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.:

  • Concrete installation on the median pier in preparation of the superstructure erection.
  • Continue construction of bridge Abutment 2 and it's support wall on the east side of the project site.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning May 6, 2024:

Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.:

  • Continue installation of a temporary crossover on I-89 within the vacinity of the bridge project area.
  • Build temporary crane pads in the median near the new pier for the future installation of the superstructure.
  • Continue construction of bridge Abutment 2 and it's support wall on the east side of the project site.

  • Installation of temporary construction signs on U.S. Route 2 between Bridge Street to Locus Knoll Road.
  • Installation of temporary construction sign on Interstate 89 (north and south bound) between Exit 12 (MM 78.6) to Bolton Flats (MM 74.0).
  • Work resumes on Abut 2 on the east side of the project site.
  • Project clean-up from the winter shut-down period.
