The Conservation & Stewardship Section provides administration of environmental regulatory compliance, long-term environmental commitments and natural resource protection. We facilitate merging transportation and environmental missions while supporting VTrans Strategic Plan Mission Statement to “…..provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods in a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable manner.” Additionally, this Section provides ongoing stewardship for Rail Trail development, asset management, operation and maintenance. Objectives include:
Promote natural resource protection and compliance with environmental regulations applicable to transportation projects, facilities, and infrastructure while encouraging sustainable means to managing long-term maintenance and stewardship of transportation assets and environmental commitments.
Manage Rail Trails to complement economic development efforts, improve user experience, provide connections to other existing and planned facilities, connect to communities along its length, and offer a range of transportation options, while establishing necessary asset maintenance and operational procedures to ensure Rail Trail continued functionality and enjoyment.
