The Vermont Agency of Transportation in conjunction with A.L. St. Onge Contractor Inc. (St. Onge) will be replacing the bridge decks on VT Route 118 in Montgomery. Bridge 19 is over the Trout River just east of Comstock Bridge Road. Bridge 20 is over West Hill Brook between West Hill Road and Hill Road West.
This project replaces both bridge decks that were constructed in 1953 with decking that has a greater load capacity than the existing. The bridge railings will also be replaced with new crash tested railings that ties into the surrounding community and satisfies the historic requirements.
The anticipated completion is November 2022.
- Installation of a containment system in anticipation of spot removal of existing paint on both bridges.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, May 16, 2022:
- Removal of the paint on the structural steel.
- Begin preparation of the structural steel for future installation of new bearing stiffeners.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, May 9, 2022:
- Removal of the back walls on both bridges.
- Continue stabilizing the roadway behind both bridge abutments.
- Continue installation of staging at both bridges to repair the concrete piers.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, May 2, 2022:
- Continued removal of the concrete decking on half of Bridge 19 over the Trout River.
- Work on road stabilization on both bridge abutments.
- Installation of staging at Bridge 19 piers.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, April 25, 2022:
- Continue with removal of the concrete decking on half of Bridge 20 over the West Hill Brook.
- Begin removal of the concrete decking on half of Bridge 19 over the Trout River.
On April 11, 2022, St. Onge began mobilization work setting up temporary traffic signals on the east end of Bridge 19 and the west end of Bridge 20, allowing for one lane of alternating traffic during the construction. In addition, temporary concrete barriers will be placed later this week to delineate working on one side of the bridges at a time.
