FAQ - Rumble Strips

Centerline rumble stripes (CLRS) are proven, low cost safety enhancements that reduce head-on and opposite-direction sideswipe crashes, run-off-road crashes, lane drift due to fatigue or distraction, and off tracking along horizontal curves. CLRS improve centerline visibility in wet conditions and aid in guidance in fog and snow.  In the United States, CLRS installations have been linked to a 44% reduction in head-on fatal and injury crashes on two-lane roads.

Map of Proposed Rumble Strips along VT 15

VTrans began installing CLRS in 2009.  Since 2009, approximately 700 centerline miles within the State Highway System has gone implemented centerline line rumble stripe criteria guidelines.

Criteria for Centerline Rumble Stripe Installations:

  • Vehicle speed of 45 MPH or greater
  • Traffic volumes of at least 1,500 vehicles per day (Average Annual Daily Traffic)
  • Paved (proposed or existing) lane/shoulder widths of 28 feet or wider
  • Residence offsets greater than 100 feet from the roadway centerline
  • Note:  Additionally, if the criteria above is not met and there is a pattern of head-on, side-swipe, or single vehicle run-off-road crashes, CLRS may be considered.
