Emergency Culvert Repairs - I-89 Georgia

During the 2019 Halloween rainstorm, a 580-foot-long culvert beneath I-89 at milemarker 106.7 was damaged, causing holes to open on the bottom of the pipe. VTrans engineers and contractor S.D. Ireland are working together to repair the culvert before the spring runoff. The roadway has been stabilized, and work will continue until all repairs have been completed.

The Agency closed a section of the northbound right lane just north of exit 18 in late January due to settlement of material over the culvert. Additionally, since February 12, a short section of the southbound left lane is being closed daily after the morning commute to facilitate the construction of a crossover lane of pavement through the median.

When culvert repairs are complete, the northbound traffic will be crossed over the median to the southbound passing lane. While northbound traffic and southbound traffic are on the southbound lanes, the settlement caused by the storm will be fixed with flowable grout.
