AOT Road Construction Report – Week of 9/9/24
This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Note: When projects are completed, they are no longer listed in this report.
Interstates:
I-91 Bradford – A temporary daytime single-lane closure for maintenance repairs of bridges is in place just north of Exit 16 on I-91 South. This lane closure is scheduled to alternate between the high speed and low speed lanes throughout the week. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph remains in place through the work zone.
I-91 Derby – A paving project on I-91 will require shifting single-lane closures northbound from Exit 28 to the U.S./Canada border and southbound from the border to one mile south of Exit 27. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place through the work zones. On Thursday or Friday, flaggers will guide traffic when the on- and off-ramps for Exit 27 southbound are paved. Expect delays.
I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 South between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect for the remainder of the summer. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 North will be in effect Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound and Sunday through Thursday 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. northbound between Exit 19 in St. Albans and the Lamoille River Bridge in Milton (MM 102). The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the construction area. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone.
I-89 Richmond – On I-89 south of Exit 11, motorists will encounter daily lane closures Monday through Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the northbound and southbound lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled.
I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until fall 2025: For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 South and then back to I-89 North north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph with a 14’ height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.
I-91 Springfield-Hartland – Alternating lane closures will be in place on I-91 South from north of Exit 9 to just south of Exit 7. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect through the work zone. The on- and off-ramps for Exits 7, 8, and 9 will remain open during final pavement marking, but motorists should be aware of limited widths, speed reductions, and shifting traffic patterns.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on I-91 over VT 121. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 at the I-91 overpass is reduced to one-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals Monday through Friday.
State Highways:
Belvidere – A culvert replacement project on VT 109 between Old Route 109 and Jim Road will have traffic control present allowing for one-lane of alternating travel using flaggers and traffic control signals.
Bennington – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.
Berlin – Nighttime single-lane closures are planned for Sunday and Monday nights on Berlin State Highway from the on/off ramps with VT 62 to the intersection with U.S. 302. Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction. Motorists should watch for wet paint.
Berlin-Barre – Nighttime single-lane closures will be present on VT 62 Sunday and Monday nights from the Exit 7 interchange to the intersection with U.S. 302. Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. traffic will be reduced to a single lane in either direction. A uniformed traffic officer may also be present at the intersection of VT 62, Airport Road, and Fisher Road during these hours. Motorists should be aware of wet paint. Daytime lane closures are planned for Wednesday to Friday on VT 62 east of the Berlin Street intersection.
Berlin-Barre Town – A paving project is nearing completion on VT 63. Daytime shoulder and lane closures are planned from the I-89 Exit 6 interchange to the intersection with VT 14 for Wednesday through Friday.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be present on VT 142 while the intersection with the new bridge for VT/NH 119 is constructed.
Cambridge-Belvidere – A resurfacing project on VT 109 at its intersection with VT 108 in Cambridge to its intersection with VT Route 118 in Belvidere will cause one-lane of alternating traffic Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in multiple areas.
Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15. Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 from just east of its intersection with VT 100C in the Village of Johnson to Park Street and from Hubbard Drive to the VT 15/ VT 108 junction in Cambridge.
Colchester – Improvements are underway at the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and the U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 intersection. Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road and intermittently on U.S. 2 between the I-89 bridge and Jasper Mine Road. I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 North and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 South, with the I-89 northbound off-ramp slip lane temporarily closed. Motorists can turn right or left onto U.S. 2 at the signalized intersection of I-89 northbound off-ramp and U.S. 2.
Fairfield – The deck replacement continues on Bridge #6 on VT 36, 7.7 miles west of the VT 108 junction. Monday through Friday minimal to no delays. To complete the line striping, traffic control will be present allowing one-lane of travel.
Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway for Bridge 20 on VT 121 over the Saxtons River. Temporary traffic signals are installed to allow alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge 24/7. Overweight vehicles are not permitted to cross the existing bridge and must seek alternate routes until traffic is shifted to the new bridge this fall. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., flaggers will be on-site periodically near the junction of VT 121 and Fisher Hill Road to facilitate alternating one-way traffic.
Hartford – Monday through Friday during daytime hours, motorists should expect minor delays with traffic shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 and sideroads from the Hartford/Hartland town line to the VA Medical Center. Tuesday and Wednesday during nighttime hours, motorists should expect minimal delays with traffic shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 from the intersection with VT 14 to VA Medical Center. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Hubbardton – Cliff stabilization work continues on VT 30 between Hortonia Road and Columbia Drive. The southbound lane is closed to traffic. Motorists should be prepared to stop as they approach the work zone and to be routed through the northbound lane by either a traffic signal or by flaggers.
Ludlow – Pleasant Street at the junction of Pleasant Street and Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic to facilitate project construction. A detour is in place that routes vehicle traffic from Pleasant Street on Elm Street, Main Street, and Pleasant Street Extension.
Marshfield-Danville – On U.S. 2 from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to the VT 15 intersection in West Danville, motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and minor delays Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Flaggers and uniform traffic officers will assist motorists through the work zone.
Morristown – Motorists should expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours on VT 15 in Morristown (MM 0.319-0.339) due to a culvert installation. The work is taking place between East Main Street in Hyde Park and Needles Eye Road in Morristown. Construction will be active at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. Motorists can expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours and are advised to use caution when driving through the area.
Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic will be in place on VT 12 throughout the project limits while a paving project continues. Lane closures may become lengthy during paving operations and motorists should expect delays. Flaggers will be present to help direct traffic through affected intersections and into driveways.
Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic control will be present to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7.
Plainfield – A slope stabilization project is beginning on U.S. 2 in Plainfield. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 approximately 1 mile west of the intersection with VT 214, from mile marker 0.6 to mile marker 0.7. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Pownal-Dorset – The contractor will be working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily on U.S. 7 North and South between Pownal and Dorset. Motorists should expect lane and shoulder closures for the installation of signs.
Richmond – Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a single lane of alternating travel near Bridge #29 construction. Motorists can expect a gravel surface on both approaches of the bridge site.
Royalton – Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic with flaggers on VT 14 between Vesper Road and Meadow Lane in Royalton. Minor delays are expected.
Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project will require nighttime lane closures with alternating one-way traffic from Sunday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., on U.S. 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. 7, U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue, and U.S. BUS 4 between Ripley Road and U.S. 7. Intermittent width reductions will affect intersecting side streets on U.S. 7. Motorists can expect grooved and uneven surfaces with raised structures on U.S. 7 and U.S. BUS 4.
Searsburg – A new project will begin on VT 9. The contractor will be installing traffic control. The westbound shoulder will be closed to allow for the removal of trees and grubbing, and installation of fill to create the temporary roadway.
Williston – A culvert replacement under VT 2A 90’ north of the old State Police barracks begins. Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., motorists can expect one lane of travel in each direction.
Woodstock – A culvert replacement project is ongoing on U.S. 4 near Valley View Road. One lane of alternating traffic is expected for the second half of the week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with flaggers. After work hours, the roadway will be open to two lanes of traffic.
