Construction on the Shelburne Street Roundabout Project began in 2021 and included:
- the creation of a single-lane roundabout;
-
the addition of a turn lane onto Ledge Road for southbound left-turning traffic;
-
the construction of dedicated pedestrian and shared pedestrian/bicyclist facilities;
-
and new signage, street lighting, pavement markings, drainage and stormwater runoff treatment and the relocation and consolidation of buried utilities.
This roadway redesign project impacted local and commuter traffic throughout construction. Transportation management included:
- Maintaining pedestrian and bicycle accommodations throughout construction
-
Implementing detour routes during appropriate construction phases
-
Restricting left turns during select construction phases
-
Implementing off-site student pick-up drop-off locations as needed
-
A comprehensive construction phasing/sequencing plan
Detours and road closures continued to be in place during select construction phases. The City of Burlington was in communication with emergency services, public transportation, school districts and nearby businesses to keep them informed about changes to traffic patterns so that delays can be anticipated.
