Project Dates: September 1, 2022 - August 31, 2024
Project Description:
VTrans has established significant phosphorus (P) reduction targets to meet the Lake Champlain P TMDL implementation plan requirements. As of October 1, 2021, VTrans has implemented Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce P by 93.3 kg/yr. With a compliance target of 1605 kg/yr by 2036, VTrans is currently only at 5.8% of their target. This project will examine the potential to substantially enhance P removal in select stormwater treatment practices using Drinking Water Treatment Residuals (DWTRs), which are a by-product of drinking water processing.

Implementation:
The researchers and TAC met in September 2024 to discuss next steps. The researchers plan to prepare a short brief about using Drinking Water Treatment Residuals for Phosphorus and other nutrient removal from stormwater sand filters. The brief will include the team’s experience with different DWTR sources and how they combine with other filter media.
