Safe Systems

The Safe Systems section of the Operations and Safety Bureau is comprised of the Active Transportation group and the State Highway Safety Office

Active Transportation

The Active Transportation group is made up of VTrans experts improving safety for people walking and bicycling. For the first time in over 20 years, the Agency has two dedicated staff to strengthen the work already done and lead the integration of this mode of travel within Vermont. By creating an Active Transportation team within the Safe System section, we are advancing the safety and accessibility of vulnerable users. Examples include: creating an alliance with external partners, serving as subject matter experts, evolving the Complete Streets approach, creating an inventory of existing active transportation infrastructure and associated gaps, and reviewing policy to prioritize vulnerable users.

What is Active Transportation?

Active Transportation is human-powered mobility, such as walking, biking, rolling, the use of mobility aids and electric-assist devices.

Why is it important?

Active Transportation can improve mental and physical health, quality of life (by increasing social participation due to pace of travel), reduce air pollution and green house gas emissions, generate economic benefits, and reduce vehicles on the road, making roads safer from those walking, biking, or rolling.

What is a vulnerable users?
