The function of the Drilling Unit within the Geotechnical Engineering Section is to provide accurate subsurface information to Geotechnical Engineering staff. The Drilling Unit operates track and skid mounted wash boring and coring rigs, truck mounted auger rigs, vane shear equipment, and various soil and rock sampling devices. The team conducts borings and field testing in accordance with AASHTO requirements that include: soil sampling, rock coring, and field classification of soils; installs monitoring wells and inclinometers; and performs pavement and concrete coring operations.
