Please Note: Our laboratory does not test soils for home gardening or agricultural purposes. Instead, please go to the UVM Soils Testing Site for these tests.
The Soils Laboratory is an AASHTO accredited laboratory and is located in the Dill Building at the Construction & Materials HQ in Berlin. The soils lab supports our Engineering group by providing comprehensive geotechnical testing services that include strength, consolidation, moisture-density, and a variety of index tests that are conducted on soil collected from borings advanced by the Agency’s Drill Team and samples submitted by engineering consulting firms, other VTrans Sections, and Vermont municipalities. Requests for testing can be made using the Soil Laboratory Test Request Form.

The Regional & Central Aggregate Laboratory’s function is to test aggregates and soil aggregate mixtures used on VTrans projects to verify compliance with VTrans Specifications. This includes both laboratory testing of samples and field testing of materials for compaction. In addition to aggregate samples, rock samples are tested for strength parameters and salt testing is performed in order to verify compliance with specifications. The aggregate laboratory’s also assists municipalities in characterizing aggregate when requested. Tests include gradation, durability, and wear. All laboratories also perform testing in support of Agency research efforts.

The Aggregate Unit maintains the Approved Aggregate Source List. All aggregates as identified in the list have been approved for use on Agency construction projects. Questions regarding the list and process should be directed to the Aggregate Unit Supervisor or AOT.AggregateSources@vermont.gov.
